Definition
Yolk sac tumor is a nonseminomatous malignant germ cell tumor that secretes AFP.
Mean age at presentation of ovarian yolk sac tumor: between 15 and 25 years
Clinical features
Abdominal pain, pelvic mass.
May be complicated by ascites, torsion, or infection.
Possible compressive syndrome.
Laboratory findings
Since yolk sac tumor secretes AFP, this biomarker is useful for diagnosis and is a valuable tool for postoperative follow-up.
Values at diagnosis are extremely elevated
(normal threshold <100 micrograms).
Ultrasound
Large lesion with a dual component:
- Solid, hypervascularized component;
- Cystic component;
Sometimes necrotic or calcified areas depending on evolution.
Management
Surgical treatment and chemotherapy.
A highly chemosensitive tumor; conservative treatment is sometimes considered.
