Definition
Interspinous osteoarthritis
Clinical features
Low back pain, sometimes severely disabling
Laboratory findings
Normal
Radiography
Hyperlordosis
Remodeling and osteocondensation of the superior and inferior aspects of the spinous processes, which may appear enlarged, sometimes with formation of a neoarticulation
Ultrasound
Not indicated
CT
Remodeling and osteocondensation of the superior and inferior aspects of the spinous processes, which may appear enlarged, sometimes with formation of a neoarticulation
MRI
An interspinous bursitis, potentially inflamed, may be demonstrated on MRI
Management
Treatment relies on NSAIDs and analgesics, sometimes supplemented by in situ injections.
In refractory cases, resection of a spinous process may be performed.
