Ultrasound
Reference examination for evaluation of the gallbladder and gallstones, which appear as a dependent echogenic focus with posterior acoustic shadowing.
Repositioning the patient helps differentiate a stone from a cholesterol polyp.
Sludge: dependent echogenic material with a fluid-fluid level
CT
CT has low sensitivity for detecting gallbladder and biliary stones in general: purely cholesterol stones are not visible
MRI
MRCP: indicated in cases of suspected stone migration not visualized on ultrasound
Differential diagnosis
Cholesterol polyp,
Cholesterolosis of gallbladder,
Gallbladder tumor
