Definition

The most common non-parasitic splenic cyst

Population: young subjects

Often large due to prolonged asymptomatic course

Clinical features

Asymptomatic

Complications:

-rupture into the peritoneal cavity if >8 cm

-intracystic hemorrhage --> Acute pain

Ultrasound

Fine mobile echoes within a cyst (cholesterol flecks)

Thin septa possible

Wall with or without calcifications

CT

Spontaneously iso- or hyperdense

+/- enhancing thin septa and calcified wall

MRI

Marked T2 hyperintensity

Iso- or T1 hyperintensity (hemorrhage, proteins)

Enhancement of the wall and septa
