Definition
Concerns sliding prostheses rather than hinged prostheses.
Improper component angulation leading to capsuloligamentous imbalance and eventually femorotibial dislocation.
In posterior-stabilized prostheses, possible posterior dislocation of the tibia behind the femoral implant.
Radiography
Importance of correct implantation with the goal, after total arthroplasty, of achieving a knee that is normally aligned in all three planes of space.
Frontal plane: weight-bearing goniometry (varus/valgus).
Sagittal plane: angular positioning of the implants.
Axial plane: CT.
Ultrasound
Assessment for periprosthetic collection or effusion.
CT
Good component positioning in all three planes, particularly for axial plane assessment.
MRI
Artifacts
Management
Immobilization after reduction
If recurrence, repeat surgery
