Definition

Rare complication of radiculopathy manifesting as a paradoxical reaction that preferentially affects muscles undergoing slow, progressive denervation.

Clinical features

Most commonly occurs in men around 40 years of age.

Most common form: secondary to S1 radiculopathy, involving the soleus muscle

Other territories may be involved.
