Definition

Bone discontinuity resulting either from abnormal stress applied to a normal bone (trauma) or from normal stress applied to a weakened bone (stress fractures, insufficiency fractures, pathologic fractures)

Clinical features

Pain, functional impairment, deformity, hematoma

Radiography

Fracture line
Analyze the displacement, number, and relative position of the fragments
Classify the fracture type according to the site
Search for an underlying evolving lesion: pathologic fracture?

CT

Reference examination for preoperative assessment of complex fractures or sites difficult to evaluate radiographically (Talus - Calcaneus for example)

MRI

MRI is highly sensitive for detecting occult fractures:
- the fracture line is T1 hypointense - T2 hypointense
- it is surrounded by marrow edema, T1 hypointense - T2 hyperintense
