Definition
Common benign tumor characterized by mixed proliferation of epithelial and stromal cells.
Occurs in all age groups (especially young women, 20 to 30 years)
Clinical features
- Firm nodule with well-defined margins
- Often painless
Radiography
Mammography:
- Well-circumscribed round or oval opacity
- +/- radiolucent halo, coarse popcorn-like calcifications
Ultrasound
- Oval nodule with long axis parallel to the skin plane
- Homogeneous, mildly hypoechoic echostructure with posterior enhancement
- Regular, well-defined margins with lateral shadowing
- Mobile mass under the probe.
No alteration of adjacent structures. - Absence of a hyperechoic rim
- Moderate contrast, with brightness slightly lower than that of the adjacent tissue.
MRI
Rarely indicated
- Iso T1
- Iso or slightly hyperintense T2
- Moderate and slow enhancement
