Definition
Bacterial purulent pleurisy.
An exudative stage of pleural congestion is initially observed, followed by the development of a collection between the two pleural layers.
Clinical features
Fever, cough, pleuritic chest pain.
Radiography
Lenticular-shaped opacity with an air-fluid level, arising from the pleura.
Ultrasound
Echogenic, homogeneous pleural effusion, without septations, with a cellular appearance.
CT
- Homogeneous cystic mass, lenticular in shape and well delimited by a thin, hyperdense wall
- Split pleura sign
- Air-fluid level
Management
Surgical pleural drainage revealing pus, along with antibiotic therapy.
