Definition
Autosomal recessive hereditary disease caused by a mutation at the sixth codon of the beta chain of hemoglobin (hemoglobin S), resulting in corpuscular hemolytic anemia, erythropoietic marrow hyperplasia, bone infarcts, and infectious complications (osteomyelitis) due to functional asplenia
Radiography
In the spine, from age 10 onward:
- H-shaped or "fish" vertebrae: biconcave appearance of the vertebral endplates due to infarction of the central portion of the vertebral body.
- Some vertebrae are completely collapsed.
