Definition
Cavernous malformations of the spinal cord are rare.
More than half occur at the thoracic level. Second most common site: cervical cord
CT
Often occult
MRI
- Rounded heterogeneous lesion on T1 and T2, with variable signal depending on the age of the hemorrhagic components
- Peripheral T2 hypointense rim with blooming artifact on T2* (hemosiderin)
- Gadolinium-enhanced T1: possible mild contrast enhancement
- Minimal cord swelling and edema except in cases of recent hemorrhage
