Definition
Pathologic reflux of urine from the bladder into the ureters and up to the renal collecting system
Clinical features
Most common circumstance of discovery: urinary tract infection. Other etiologies: - duplications of the urinary tract - secondary reflux related to a subureteral obstruction (urethral valve, juxtaureteral diverticulum, Neurogenic bladder, vesicosphincteric dyssynergia)
Classification
Grade I: ureteral opacification not reaching the renal collecting system.
Grade II: opacification reaching the renal collecting system without dilatation.
Grade III: mild dilatation of the urinary tract with blunting of the fornices.
Grade IV: significant dilatation with preserved impression of the pyramids on the papillae. Tortuous ureters.
Grade V: major dilatation with convex calyceal fornices
