Definition
Frequently encountered in chronic liver disease, where they constitute collateral pathways between the portal and superior caval systems via Esophageal varices, and the inferior caval system via the left inferior phrenic vein and then the left renal vein.
Clinical features
Upper GI bleeding in case of rupture.
CT
Submucosal varices are visualized within the gastric wall as tubular, sometimes intraluminal, protruding enhancement after contrast injection.
Perigastric varices are visualized outside the gastric wall.
