Definition
Ectopic thyroid tissue located at the base of the tongue
Clinical features
May be small and asymptomatic.
May be nodular and result in dysphagia, dysphonia, and dyspnea
MRI
May be useful to assess the size of the lingual thyroid
Nuclear medicine
Positive scintigraphy confirms the diagnosis
