Definition
Tumor derived from germ cell stem cells.
Several types are distinguished:
- mature teratoma
- immature
- malignant
Predominantly affects young (< 5 years) and Asian patients
The components are very often mixed: cysts, fat, hemorrhage, solid tissue...
Clinical features
Headaches, nausea, vomiting, cranial nerve VI palsy
Ultrasound
Prenatal ultrasound:
- macrocephaly
- hydrocephalus
CT
Spontaneous hyperdensity: calcifications, bone, teeth
Hypodensities: necrosis, hemorrhage
After injection: heterogeneous enhancement
MRI
T2*: hemorrhagic components
T2: cystic portions in hypersignal
Gadolinium: heterogeneous enhancement
Management
Surgical resection
Differential diagnosis
Craniopharyngioma
