Definition

Elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and right-to-left shunt through a defect communicating between the systemic and pulmonary circulations

Clinical features

Symptoms related to chronic hypoxemia and its consequences:

  • polycythemia,
  • hemostatic disorders,
  • thromboembolic events,
  • renal failure

Complications:

  • Abcess of brain,
  • endocarditis,
  • cerebral embolism
  • hemoptysis, which may be fatal
  • congestive heart failure
