Definition
Elongation of the styloid processes due to ossification of the stylohyoid ligaments.
Risk factors:
- Cervical trauma
- Surgery (tonsillectomy, dental surgery...)
Clinical features
Poorly localized neck pain, otalgia, pharyngeal discomfort, foreign body sensation, external carotid artery syndrome: pain along the course of the external carotid artery.
Radiography
Linear, partial or complete ossification of the stylohyoid ligaments
CT
Linear, partial or complete ossification of the stylohyoid ligaments.
Search for differential diagnosis
Management
Medical treatment: image-guided infiltration of lidocaine or corticosteroids.
Surgical treatment: removal of the ossification and styloid process via a transoral or external cervical approach
