Definition

Spina bifida: defect in the closure of the posterior vertebral arches
- occulta = frequent variant, asymptomatic, intact skin covering
- aperta = protrusion of meningeal tissue (meningocele) or of tissues contained within the spinal canal (myelomeningocele, lipomyelomeningocele).
