Definition
Retrophagyngeal abcess, which may be caused by an upper respiratory tract infection, a sore throat, suppurative adenitis, or pharyngeal/esophageal perforation
Clinical features
Generally < 1 year of age
Fever, dysphagia, neck stiffness
Laboratory findings
Most often Staphylococcal
Radiography
Widening of the retropharyngeal space > 3/4 of the vertebral body diameter
Loss of cervical lordosis
Anterior displacement of the airway
May contain air or an air-fluid level
