Definition

Desquamative interstitial pneumonia is caused by extensive accumulation of macrophages in the distal airspaces with mild fibrosis of the interalveolar septa.

Also called macrophage alveolitis.

Etiologies: smoking ++++ and metabolic disorders.

Radiography

Radiography may be normal.

CT

Ground-glass opacity with peripheral and basal distribution.
Possible microcystic or honeycomb changes.
Decreased volume of both lungs.
