Definition

Suppurative infectious pneumonia due to a Gram-negative organism.
Preferentially affects frail and alcoholic patients.

The most common route of contamination is aspiration of oral secretions.

Clinical features

  • Dyspnea
  • Cough
  • Fever

CT

  • Lobar bronchogenic pneumonia, markedly edematous, causing transient bulging of the fissures
  • Rapid progression to extensive tissue necrosis, of the gangrenous type
  • Classic abscess
  • Bronchopneumonia
  • The term sometimes used is "necrotizing pneumonia"

Management

  • Antibiotic therapy
