Definition
Represents one of the variants of persistent carotid-vertebrobasilar anastomosis, with an estimated prevalence of 0.1-0.6%, generally unilateral
Classification
- Saltzman type I: The persistent primitive trigeminal artery supplies the distal vertebrobasilar arteries. The posterior communicating artery is absent, and the caudal basilar artery is absent or hypoplastic, with hypoplastic distal vertebral arteries.
- Saltzman type II: The persistent primitive trigeminal artery supplies the superior cerebellar arteries, with the posterior cerebral arteries supplied by the posterior communicating artery.
