Definition

Avascular necrosis of capitate, first described by Jönsson in 1942, with the following etiologies:

  • post-traumatic,
  • microtraumatic,
  • dorsal instability,
  • corticosteroid injection,
  • gout,
  • idiopathic.

Clinical features

Wrist pain with mechanical rhythm

Radiography

Poorly sensitive compared to MRI

MRI

Signal abnormality of the capitate:

  • T1 hypointensity
  • T2 FatSat hyperintensity
  • absence of enhancement after injection
