Definition

Ubiquitous organisms that constitute part of the normal environmental flora

Frequent infections in cases of severe immunosuppression with a CD4 count below 50/mm3

Radiography

Normal in most AIDS patients with disseminated disease and positive sputum cultures

CT

The combination of mild cylindrical bronchiectasis and centrilobular micronodular opacities forming a tree-in-bud pattern, predominating in the middle lobe and lingula, is suggestive of nontuberculosis mycobacterial infection of lung.

Hilar or mediastinal lymphadenopathy, nodules, diffuse pulmonary infiltrates with upper lobe predominance, focal consolidations, and endobronchial masses may be noted.

Ground-glass opacities, peribronchial thickening, and interlobular septal thickening may be found

Differential diagnosis

Pulmonary tuberculosis
