Definition

Infection of the pulmonary parenchyma.
A particularly common entity in children.

Round pneumonia evolves within 24 to 48 hours into a typical lobar pneumonia.

Clinical features

  • Dyspnea
  • Fever.
  • Chest pain.
  • Abdominal pain

Radiography

  • Rounded parenchymal opacity with well-defined margins, located in the perihilar or posterior regions.

Ultrasound

  • Pleural effusion.
  • Assessment for loculations.
    Pre-thoracentesis or pre-drainage

CT

Useful for evaluating complications: abscess, empyema, bronchopleural fistula.

Management

  • Antibiotic therapy
