Definition
Most common malignant tumor of the spleen.
Primary cancers: breast and melanoma being the most common, otherwise ovary, stomach, melanoma, uterus.
Non-hypervascular tissue nodule: consider metastasis or lymphoma depending on the oncologic context
Ultrasound
- Target-like appearance with a markedly hypoechoic center and hypoechoic peripheral halo
CT
The appearance depends on the primary lesion.
- Spontaneously hypo- or isodense with a necrotic center
- Minimal enhancement, or peripheral enhancement
- Hypervascular (if renal cell carcinoma)
- Cystic (melanoma or ovarian)
- Calcified (mucinous carcinoma)
MRI
- T1: Hypointense
- T2: Tissue hyperintensity
Differential diagnosis
- Lymphoma with splenic involvement.
