Definition
Process that may result in ischemic necrosis, usually the consequence of a vascular abnormality such as occlusion of a feeding pulmonary artery by an embolus.
Pulmonary infarctus may also be secondary to vasculitis.
CT
Typically triangular or dome-shaped opacity, with the base in contact with the pleura and the apex directed toward the hilum.
The opacity represents local hemorrhage, with or without central tissue necrosis.
Predominantly located in the lower lobes, especially on the right, in the costophrenic angle.
