Definition
Displacement of part of the digestive tract outside the abdominal cavity
CT
Femoral hernia, located below the inguinal ligament.
CT signs of femoral hernia:
- Small bowel mechanical obstruction
- Herniated bowel loop anterior to the pectineal muscle and posterior to the horizontal line through the pubic tubercles
- Compression of the adjacent femoral vein
- Signs of strangulated loop compromise due to closed-loop involvement.
Hernia of the linea alba: 3 types
- Paraumbilical hernia: the most common, female predominance, predisposing factors = multiparity, cirrhosis, obesity
- Epigastric hernia: male predominance, located between the xiphoid process and the umbilicus
- Hypogastric hernia: rare, located below the umbilicus
