Definition

Post-traumatic lesion, generally following blunt trauma.
May go unnoticed in the acute phase.

Subperiosteal hematomas are also referred to as "turret exostoses"

Clinical features

Often asymptomatic.
Pain

Ultrasound

Rounded anechoic area in contact with the cortex

CT

Hypodensity with ossified margins in a biconvex lens shape in its chronic form

MRI

T1: intermediate signal
T2: hyperintense

Nuclear medicine

Peripheral uptake with central lucency in a "donut" pattern.

Scintigraphy can also be useful to assess ossification maturity

Differential diagnosis

Aneurysmal bone cyst,
simple bone cyst
