Definition
Benign breast lesion composed of adenolipomatous tissue, delineated by a capsule.
Clinical features
- Asymptomatic
- Palpable, firm
Radiography
- Mass generally larger than 3 cm
- Well circumscribed
- Density with heterogeneous central areas related to the fat component (radiopaque and radiolucent areas)
- Capsule
- Halo sign: peripheral radiolucent zone caused by compression of surrounding tissue
- May contain calcifications
Ultrasound
- Well-circumscribed formation
- Heterogeneous structure with hypoechoic and hyperechoic areas/bands
MRI
- Breast-within-a-breast appearance
- Fat and matrix tissue with variable enhancement
Management
The presence of fibroglandular tissue makes it possible for carcinoma to develop within the hamartoma.
Differential diagnosis
- Liposarcoma
- Cowden disease
- Lipoma
- Fibroadenoma
