Definition

Retention of milk within a dilated lactiferous duct, most often occurring postpartum.
A galactocele can be quiescent with delayed presentation.

Discharge may occur with superinfection, which can be complicated by an abscess.

Radiography

Retroareolar, finger-like mass of variable size.

Ultrasound

  • Appearance of an atypical cyst
  • Atypical cyst with thick fluid content (internal echoes with irregular distribution, without posterior enhancement) or with a fluid-fluid level
  • Abscess in case of superinfection (hypoechoic collection)

MRI

In cases of multiple lesions making clinical breast examination difficult, when there is discordance between imaging and clinical findings.

Management

Fine-needle aspiration for cytopathologic diagnosis
