Clinical features

Hemiballismus secondary to non-ketotic hyperglycemia is the second most common cause of hemiballismus in adults after vascular etiology, hemorrhagic or ischemic (classically described involvement of the subthalamic nuclei).

Laboratory findings

Non-ketotic hyperglycemia

CT

Spontaneous hyperdensities:
- of the putamen (always involved),
- of the head of the caudate nucleus (in the majority of cases)
- of the globus pallidus (rarer).
The lesions are often unilateral (contralateral to the hemiballismus).
