Definition
Emphysema: destruction of alveolar walls and enlargement of airspaces distal to the terminal bronchiole.
Paraseptal emphysema refers to predominant involvement of the subpleural, peribronchovascular, and apical regions. It affects the periphery of the pulmonary lobule adjacent to the connective tissue septa.
CT
Intraparenchymal hypodense areas with preferential involvement of the subpleural and peribronchovascular regions, sometimes associated with bullae.
Paraseptal emphysema is delimited by the interlobular septa but has no wall of its own.
Associations with:
- Pneumothorax
- Centrilobular emphysema
- Idiopathic giant bullous emphysema
