Definition
Tubular ectasia of rete testis is a dilation of the rete testis tubules, a structure located in the testicular hilum that collects sperm produced by the seminiferous tubules.
Clinical features
- a common anatomical variant in men >50 years of age
- may be a sign of obstruction in younger men
Ultrasound
Reference examination
Presents as cysts of variable size in the testicular hilum. The microcysts are separated by a network of more or less dense echogenic septa, giving it a "honeycomb" or "mesh-like" appearance.
Pseudocystic appearance: an area formed by multiple juxtaposed microcysts of variable size.
Tubular ectasia of rete testis is often bilateral, although unilateral forms exist.
Absence of vascularity on color Doppler
MRI
May confirm the diagnosis but is generally not necessary (ultrasound diagnosis).
Differential diagnosis
Testicular tumors (generally hypervascularized on color Doppler)
