Definition
Distal semimembranosus tendon rupture is a rare form of hamstring injury, occurring during running activities
Clinical features
Acute pain over the posteromedial aspect of the knee
Radiography
Normal
MRI
Discontinuity of the semitendinosus tendon
Retracted, hypertrophied tendon stump with increased signal intensity
Increased signal along the course of the semitendinosus
Later, amyotrophy and fatty involution of the semitendinosus muscle belly
Search for associated injury of the other pes anserinus tendons: gracilis, sartorius
Differential diagnosis
Distal semimembranosus tendon tear
Tendinopathy or tear of the other pes anserinus tendons (gracilis, sartorius)
