Definition
Chondroblastoma (Codman tumor) is a rare benign epiphyseal cartilaginous tumor occurring in young patients
Clinical features
< 1% of all primary bone tumors overall, generally occurring before age 20
male predilection
Radiography
Well-defined ovoid or lobulated osteolytic lesion, with thin peripheral sclerosis, eccentric within the epiphysis of a long bone (femur, humerus, tibia, or within an apophysis)
Internal calcifications (40-60%)
Joint effusion (1/3)
Size: 1-10 cm
CT
Better delineation of margins and relationships with the articular cartilage and metaphysis.
Periosteal reaction (50%)
Internal calcifications (40-60%)
Possible endosteal scalloping and cortical breakthrough
MRI
Reference examination.
Perilesional edema +++
Cartilaginous matrix:
- T1: Hypointense - Intermediate signal
- T2FS/STIR: Intermediate signal - hyperintense
- Occasional fluid-fluid levels, given the potential association with aneurysmal bone cyst
