Definition

Bony protuberance on the dorsal aspect of the wrist, located opposite the 2nd and 3rd carpometacarpal joints.

The bony prominence may correspond to an os styloideum, an unfused accessory ossification center that appears during embryonic life and persists into adulthood (prevalence of 1–4%).

Clinical features

Often asymptomatic.

Occasionally pain and decreased range of motion
secondary to carpometacarpal osteoarthritis.

Radiography

Frontal view: focal area of osteocondensation near the trapezoid, capitate, and bases of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals, corresponding to the projection of the os styloideum.

CT

Analyzes the nature of the carpe bossu disease, specifies the relationship (fusion or lack thereof) of the os styloideum with the adjacent bones (trapezoid, capitate, bases of the 2nd and 3rd metacarpals), as well as the presence of partial or complete coalition.

Differential diagnosis

Tumors, calcifications, accessory muscles (extensor carpi manus brevis), ganglion cyst.
