Definition
Involvement of an almost complete but suspended segment of the spinal cord,
most often at the thoracolumbar level,
idiopathic origin
Clinical features
Depends on the level involved:
-Flaccid paraplegia
-absent deep tendon reflexes
-sphincter disturbances
DIAGNOSIS OF EXCLUSION
MRI
The spinal cord may be
-normal
-enlarged over a height of at least 3 to 4 vertebral levels
-T2 hyperintense area ≥ 2/3 of the cord cross-sectional area on axial imaging
-enhancement after injection, predominantly perimedullary
-cord involvement may be diffuse
