Definition
Renal abscesses represent a rare complication of urinary tract infections.
Focal bacterial nephritis may progress to acute pyelonephritis and then to renal abscess.
The abscess may rupture the capsule and extend extrarenally, forming a perinephric phlegmon that can then migrate along the psoas muscles, the inguinal regions, and the pelvis.
Predisposing factors: obstruction of the urinary excretory cavities, immunosuppression
Management
Imaging allows for positive diagnosis and can also guide percutaneous drainage, thus constituting a good alternative to surgery
